WADEBRIDGE Bowling Club opens for the season on Saturday 22 April with an afternoon of bowling designed to give as many members as possible the opportunity to flex their bowling arms outdoors for the first time this year. The exact nature of the event is not revealed until the time, but it is generally a format that mixes up the players every few ends so that everyone has a chance to play with and against lots of others.
The Wadebridge club has about 70 members, from teenagers to eighty-somethings, women and men, and is always looking for more people to join. There are full Bowls Cornwall league programmes for men and women, as well as friendly matches against other clubs, and a regular Tuesday Club Night.
Club nights provide a way into playing bowls for those who have not played before. The first is on 25 April, starting at 5.15 pm for 5.30. There is also a “Taster Day” on Saturday 20th May, specifically designed to explain and introduce bowls, where club coaches and members will be present to give help and guidance. Contact the Club Secretary, Nick Powell, for more information (nickp.wbcsec @gmail.com).
The club this year will be benefiting from a brand new roof, courtesy of a £10,000 grant from Awards For All (the Big Lottery Fund). Club Vice-President David Atfield, who oversaw the grant application process, was on hand as the roofers finished their work. “This means we will continue to offer a valuable sporting facility to the people, young and old, of the Wadebridge area,” he said.
