WADEBRIDGE Mayor, Councillor Pamela Starling, opened the season at Wadebridge Bowling Club recently. On a brilliant sunny day, the mayor’s opening wood touched the jack - something the regular players found hard to match in subsequent play.
Councillor Starling and her husband Peter stayed to watch as twelve rinks contested a “stick drive”, each playing five ends against four other rinks. At the end of an exciting afternoon, two rinks were tied on a shots difference of fifteen. The winning rink, decided by most shots scored, was Caroline Jasper, Trevor Little, Vera Beare and Kevin Jones. At the Faith Tea which followed, club president Dawn Bunce announced that the “Spider” played before the stick drive had raised £47 for the charity Epilepsy Action. The raffle also raised £47, this going to club funds.
The President was pleased to thank the Short Mat Bowling Club, which uses the clubhouse during the winter, for their contribution of £500 to the renovation of the club house roof. The season moves on with club nights on Tuesdays and a special taster day on Saturday 20 May from 10am at the club on Egloshayle Road, for anyone of any age who is interested in playing bowls. Come along on the day, or contact Club Secretary, Nick Powell (firstname.lastname@example.org) for further information.
