The Ladies at The Point at Polzeath

By Chris Gill in Golf

SUPERB weather in May has encouraged new players and new visitors to The Point golf course and as a result we have welcomed new ladies to our section. We are still awaiting the opening of the new putting green which should be soon. Our course was looking splendid for the Ladies Charity Coffee morning on 28 April and the sun shone for the 95 ladies who took part in a 3 Ball Stableford (2 scores plus all scores to count on par 5s). A very successful day with £500 raised from the raffle, cakes and other monies for the British Heart Foundation. This was a relaxed and a fun day for all who took part and Lanhydrock’s team of Sandra Madigan, Liz Trevan and Linda Webb did well to come first with 98 points. Hot on their tails in 2nd place were The Point team of Chris Chun, Sally King and Maggie Day with 95 points.

The Point ladies have played three more 4th Division league matches against Trevose, Cape Cornwall and Whitsand Bay, all at home. Still on a winning streak we have managed to win all of these league matches. Unfortunately, the Trevose match was interrupted with heavy rain later in the day which eventually made play on the course very difficult. We were all soaked! The hot teas and nice meal in the clubhouse after the game was most welcome.

The 3rd round of the Ladies Daily Mail Foursomes was played against Treloy at the beginning of May at home and with both teams eager to win this was a very hard fought match resulting in a win for Treloy on the 18th green. Well done to our ladies Paula Thomas and Christine Hussey for making it this far. Ann Braithwaite, defending her title at the Cornwall Vets Ladies’ County Golf Association Spring Meeting at West Cornwall, did well this year to be placed 3rd with 31 points. Also mention must be made of The Point’s Jackie Smeeth who took part in the South West Medals Finals at Tehidy on 8 May. With a large and strong field, Jackie did well to come joint 12th (on c/b) just missing out on qualification for the England Final.

Other results:

5th May - Medal - 1st Paula Thomas (net 71), 2nd Jackie Smeeth (net 78).

12th May - Wooden Fork Competition – Matchplay against the Senior men (they won!).

19th May - England Golf Trust Womens’ Stableford - 1st Christine Hussey (39 points), 2nd Irene Breckon 30 points.
