Golf news from The Point at Polzeath

By Chris Gill in Golf

POOR weather over the last few weeks has resulted in fewer ladies competitions and challenging conditions when we did play. The Ladies Ping Qualifier was played on the Saturday of the Royal Cornwall Show, 10 June, in wind and rain, but that did not deter Captain Jean Tatam and Jackie Smeeth coming in first with 40 points. We also welcomed Whitsand Bay ladies to The Point for the 4th Division league match on 21 May, resulting in a win for The Point. Two friendly matches played in the last month were lost to both Tehidy Ladies (at home) and St Enodoc Vets (away). Both matches were most enjoyable and they are a good starting point for some of our new lady members.

A 36 hole competition was played on 4 June, combining Men and Ladies in a 36 hole Stableford called The Rosebowl. The weather was superb and our Vice Captain, Dawn Peters was pleased to be the ladies section winner with 67 points in total. Shane Dingle was the overall winner in the men’s section with scores of 34 and 40 points.

Luckily the weather improved for the Ladies Summer Open Bowmaker (2 scores to count) on 17 June, when The Point welcomed over 90 ladies. This competition was played in glorious sunshine and with only a light breeze and with the course looking superb and the greens running fast, there were some very high scores recorded and even 11 birdies. First place went to Falmouth’s Carol Mitcham, Donna Craig and Jo Munday with 91 pts and I might add that they had never played the course before! In second place were the Tehidy ladies, Ann Fitzhenry, Carol Peck and Annette Underhill with 88pts and third were near neighbours St Enodoc’s Barbara Graham, Terri Gliddon and Penny Cartright with 86pts. It was very close as at least six teams had 85 points. A most enjoyable day which raised £303 on the raffle for The British Heart Foundation.

The Point was also the venue for The Cornwall England Golf Team Championship Qualifier on 11 June when a number of Point members took part. Although rather windy and testing, it was a visiting team who came in with the highest score.

We are very pleased to be able to use our new putting green now which is much bigger than the last one and not as easy either! Our greenkeepers have done a splendid job.

Other results:

26 May - Ladies Stableford 1st Ann Braithwaite (38pts), 2nd Jackie Smeeth (31pts).

3 June - Medal Sally King net 73, 2nd Paula Thomas net 77, 3rd Christine Hussey net 78.

18 June - Carlyon Bay Mixed Match (away) played in the hottest of weather. Loss to The Point.
