THERE is a lot to report from Wadebridge tennis club as there has been much going on recently.
The summer leagues are in full swing with Wadebridge well represented by three men’s teams and one ladies’ team. Club nights are busy and the mini and junior tennis has seen good numbers participating in the coaching and competition.
A recent primary schools tennis festival saw six schools enjoy a taste of tennis and have a fabulous time. I organised the event with the help of head of mini tennis Thomas Leach and club coach Howard Gunn. My thanks to James Ross for co-ordinating this event along with Debbie Smith and the sports leaders from Wadebridge School who superbly assisted in the smooth running of this festival.
The Minis and Juniors travelled to Launceston tennis club in the half term and took part in the second instalment of Clash of the Clubs for 2017. Wadebridge club were victorious with Launceston second and Bude third. The Red winner was Drew Barnsley of Bude, Ruben Mudd of Launceston in Orange, Jack Joshua of Wadebridge in the Green, Matt Ryall of Launceston in the Junior boys and Charlotte Halls of Launceston in the Junior girls.
Half term also saw Wadebridge tennis club host the Road to Wimbledon. Congratulations to Matt Caddy and Naomi Cole who will now move one step closer to Wimbledon and compete for a place there in August at the county finals. On behalf of myself and all at Wadebridge tennis club we would like to wish both players all the very best of luck.
Raffa Nadal has just won his tenth French open title in 12 years as tennis continues to hit new heights of excellence and I hope continues to surprise and inspire all of you who have not yet picked up a racket.
Hope to see you all on a court this summer, don’t wait for Wimbledon.
