WHAT a month - great for Wimbledon, but testing for golfers when the ball doesn’t stop running - great scoring weather all the same. We could have been in Greece or Barbados for all the sun and heat and holiday makers will have gone back home thinking it is like this all the time. I think the heat got to a few of the ladies because numbers were down for some of our usual competitions. However, for those who did play there were a few handicap cuts. There was a good turn out for a club mixed event, The President’s Cup, held on 24 June, another hot one, when two scores were to count in a Bowmaker. Winners, Russell Abrahams, Irene Breckon and Archie Carnegie (a junior), came in with an outstanding 94 points!
The knock out competitions have been in full swing this month with members trying to complete their singles and pairs matches before the cut off date. One such team included our fantastic head greenkeeper, Tom Collings, who, on the 11th hole, was down in a ditch 150 yards from the green and hitting a completely blind shot ended up a mere inch from the hole! The opposition were flabbergasted, especially since Tom only gets to play about twice a year!
The ladies welcomed St Austell on 15 July for another 4th Division league match. Conditions were excellent and an enjoyable game and meal was had by all with the Point ladies winning 4.5 to 2.5.
23 June Stableford - won by Louise Pinnegar with 37 pts. 2nd Pat Hardman with 29 pts.
7 July Medal - winning with an amazing net 69 was Clare Derry (bronze division). Silver division winner Chris Hussey with a net 72. 3rd Louise Pinnegar, net 74.
14 July Fun competition ‘if only’ won by Chris Chun on countback to Jean Tatam with 41 points.
22 July Stableford - winner with 37 pts, Julie Cleaton. 2nd Sally King with 32 pts.
